Q & A With Beyond Fifteen’s Mackenzie Martin

  • Who inspires you?
    • My parents! They raised me to be strong and independent, just like them. I was adopted from South Korea as a baby, yet I grew up feeling loved and never felt or saw a difference from my family and others’ families. They’ve always been entrepreneurs and small business owners, who taught me how to work hard, never give up and shoot for the stars. They are truly the people I hope to be when I grow up!
  • Name two things you consider yourself to be really good at.
    1. Ballet – I danced professionally with multiple ballet companies around the U.S. for six years after graduating high school. Ballet has always been a huge part of my life and I’m grateful to give back to my dance community by teaching ballet in the evenings to develop the next generation of young artists.
    2. Public relations – As my second career, I’ve been doing PR for over five years. I love having a diverse roster of clients, where I can stretch my creativity to secure amazing results for them!
  • What show are you watching on Netflix right now?
    • Quantico! I’m really into the action genre and its fun seeing a fictional take on the secrets, conspiracies and plots that go on in government organizations. I was also a huge fan of House of Cards.
  • What was your first job?
    •  A barista at my parents’ coffee house – Amore Coffee. Fun fact: In eighth grade I did my science project around the “crema” of espresso shots (the foamy puff is one of the most prized components of a well-made espresso). My science teacher didn’t appreciate the creativity, but I wasn’t going be one of the 10 other kids doing their project on water (e.g. microwaved, purified, fresh, etc.)
  • Where is your favorite place to travel?
    • Hawaii – I went to the Big Island for the first time in 2019 and fell in love with the island life. I’m currently planning a trip to Maui for later this year, and can’t wait to explore a new island!
  • What are three things on your bucket list?
    1. Find the courage to try an extreme sport/activity.
    2. Build/create my dream home.
    3. Travel around the world (next up on my list are Ireland and Scotland).
  • What recent successes are you most proud of and why?
    • Securing broadcast media placements is always the top of clients’ wish lists, but is also one of those things that is hard to achieve without the right timely and newsworthy angle. I’m very proud of conceptualizing an angle around how plastic surgery centers like my client were seeing a huge increase in certain procedures due to the “face mask phenomenon” (people getting more work done on their ears and upper faces after months of mask-wearing) that got picked up by CBS LA. Additionally, a few months later my team secured another broadcast segment for the same client on their beauty box giveback to local frontline workers on ABC7. Special shoutout to my account coordinator, Caitlyn Smith, for driving home this big win!
  • What do you love most about Beyond Fifteen?
